Council tip or rubbish clearance — which is right for you?

Surrey's community recycling centres are free for household waste, but they're not always the right option. Here's how to decide.

Surrey’s community recycling centres are free to use for household waste and genuinely useful for the right jobs. But they’re not always the most practical option. Knowing when each makes sense saves time.

When the council tip works well

The tip is a good fit if:

  • You’re clearing a small amount — a few bags, a handful of cardboard boxes, a single piece of furniture.
  • You have a car or van to transport it yourself.
  • You’re not in a hurry and can fit around the opening hours and any queues.
  • You want to sort and separate items carefully for recycling.

Surrey County Council’s CRCs accept a wide range of materials: garden waste, wood, electricals, textiles, and household items. For small, self-transported loads it’s a straightforward, no-cost option.

When a clearance service makes more sense

There are plenty of situations where the tip becomes the harder path.

You don’t have a suitable vehicle. A clearance service collects and transports everything. If the job means multiple trips in a small car, or renting a van and doing it yourself, the arithmetic of a professional clearance starts to look more reasonable.

The volume is large. Clearing a whole loft, garage, or house means multiple tip runs across multiple days. A clearance service does it in a single visit — one booking, one morning, done.

It’s commercial or business waste. Council CRCs are for household waste only. If you’re clearing a rented office, shop, or building site, commercial waste can’t go to a community recycling centre. A licensed waste carrier is the right route.

You want the carrying done for you. Lofts, garages, and outbuildings involve heavy lifting and awkward access. A clearance service handles the work from wherever the items sit to the van — you don’t need to move anything beforehand.

Items need collecting from inside the property. Council tips are drop-off only. If you need things carried from upstairs, through a narrow hallway, or out of a basement, that’s a job for a clearance team.

On cost

Using the tip yourself is free for household waste. A rubbish clearance service starts from £189 for a quarter load, which includes collection from inside or outside the property, transportation, and licensed disposal. For anything beyond a carful, the time and effort of doing it yourself is worth factoring in.

Our licence

We’re registered with the Environment Agency as licensed waste carrier CBDU619794. You can verify that on the public register. Every load we clear goes to a licensed transfer station.
